In the wacky 1970s, an upstart league was launched to challenge the NHL's monopoly, and for seven seasons of ups-and-downs, the World Hockey Association (WHA) took shots at the NHL, raiding its player rosters, capitalizing on its ignored cities, initiating the infusion of European talent, and giving fans memories of a lifetime. For the first time ever, original WHA game broadcasts are now available on DVD! This amazing new set compiles four original television broadcasts from the era, never viewed publicly since their original broadcasts:
New England Whalers vs. Soviet Nationals - December 27, 1976, Harford Civic Center - Complete Original Broadcast - The kickoff to Soviet hockey's Super Series tour of North America was supposed to be a cakewalk for Vladislav Tretiak and the Soviet National Team. But a raucous sold-out Civic Center helped spur on the mediocre-at-best Whalers to play one of their finest games ever, and led them to a brilliant 5-2 victory. Cap Raeder stood on his head in net, while old-school stars like Doug and Gordie Roberts, Ron Busniuk, Garry Swain, George Lyle, Jim Troy, Tom Earl, and coach Harry Neale humbled the Russian visitors.
Winnipeg Jets vs. Quebec Nordiques - 1977 AVCO Cup Finals, Game 7, Colisée de Québec - Complete Original Broadcast - Arguably the two most successful franchises in WHA history, these two future NHL franchises squared off in a dramatic league championship series in 1977. After suffering a humiliating 12-3 loss in Winnipeg in Game 6, the Nordiques turned the tables in this game, clinching the series with an 8-2 win in front of an ecstatic home crowd. Thrill to the performances of Nordiques stars Real Cloutier, Marc Tardif, J.C. Winnipeg Jets vs. Edmonton Oilers, 1979 AVCO Cup Final, Game 6 - May 20, 1979, Winnipeg Arena - Complete Original Broadcast - Witness the end of an era - the final game in the history of the WHA! Wrapping up their third AVCO Cup Championship with a decisive 7-3 victory, the Winnipeg Jets thrilled the home crowd and claimed the trophy for all-time. Although Bobby Hull retired four games into the season, a host of Winnipeg hockey legends trounced Wayne Gretzky's Oilers - Kent Nilsson, Morris Lukowich, Peter Sullivan, Terry Ruskowski, Willy Lindstrom, Rich Preston, Barry Long, Lyle Moffat, Roland Eriksson, Lars-Erik Sjoberg, and the rest.
