"The Rocket" / "The Sweater" - NHL Hockey DVD
Celebrate the greatness of the man they called Rocket! This DVD features two great features centered around the legendary Maurice Richard, a Quebecois hero and one of the greatest snipers in NHL history. First, you get "The Rocket", a 1998 documentary produced by the world-renowned National Film Board of Canada that takes you through the life, career, and legend of Richard with rare archival footage and exclusive classic interviews from the likes of Frank Selke, Clarence Campbell, Bernard Gosselin, Charles Mayer, Red Storey, Jacques Beauchamp, and various other contemporaneous Richard watchers. Second, you get the award-winning 1980 animated short "The Sweater", writer Roch Carrier's classic memoir of a hockey-obsessed childhood in rural Quebec. For fans of old-time hockey, this is a must for your collection! (Note: this DVD contains both English and French narration tracks, for viewing in either language. Some of the interviews contained in the film are in English, and others in French. The French interviews have English subtitles when watching the English track; the English interviews have French subtitles when watching the French track.)

Box Text:
"Meet Maurice Richard on and off the ice and follow his spectacular career with the Montreal Canadiens - from the early 1940s, when only a few thousand people turned out for pro hockey games, to the 1950s, when the Montreal Forum was bursting with delirious fans.

From the day he got his first pair of skates to becoming the most famed player in Canadiens history, this is the man who set the bar for hockey not only in Montreal but for the league as a whole.

Newspaper photographers recall that the Rocket used to hit the puck so hard and so fast that there almost wasn't enough time to snap a picture. Teammates and officials all agree that the man who wore the #9 jersey in tribute to his first-born daughter was unstoppable. A famed example remains 1944-45 season where he scored 50 goals in 50 games including one with a 225-pound opponent strapped to his back.

Clarence Campbell, former president of the NHL, describes him as 'the most exciting player I have ever seen in my life.' The same man suspended Richard before the playoffs in 1955, a move that so enraged Quebecers that when Campbell showed up at the Forum for the playoffs, his presence sparked a now-famous riot.

The Rocket features footage from those classic games long gone and revealing interviews with Richard himself, the first real star of the golden age of hockey."
