Despite being two-time defending champion, pundits were already writing off Lance Armstrong when he appeared weak and plodding in the early parts of Stage 10. It was the beginning of the mountain stages, and if Lance could not dominate here, he could not make up the difference to claim the yellow jersey.
Then, midway through the stage, as if posessed by a higher power, Lance kicked it into gear. Within moments, he reached the lead peloton, and with a long glance back at his main rival Jan Ullrich, he moved ahead to stay. When he crossed the finish line at Alpe d'Huez far ahead of the pack, he pumped his fists to say: I'm back, I'm focused, and I'm going to win my third consecutive Tour de France.
