After a decade of outstanding achievements, including the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year award, three Gold Gloves, the 1976 AL MVP award, being named Captain of the team, and winning two World Series Championships, Munson was acknowledged as the glue that held the team together and led them back to baseball's elite. Then, on that ill-fated off-day in August 1979, it all came to an end - and wouldn't you know it, the Yankees did not win the championship for another 17 years.
