Mark McGwire was the first to break Roger Maris' 37-year-old record - but less than a week later, Chicago's Slammin' Sammy Sosa hit his 62nd to join him in baseball history. McGwire may have hit four more HR in the end, but it was Sammy who led his team to the playoffs and won the NL MVP award.
