Mariucci Arena is named in honor of long time hockey coach John Mariucci, who was also a standout hockey and football player for the Gophers. Mariucci coached the Gophers from 1952 to 1966 with the exception of the 1955-1956 season. Dedicated in 1993, Mariucci Arena has a hockey game capacity of 10,000. University of Minnesota Hockey enjoys a long history, becoming a varsity sport in 1921. The Golden Gophers have won five national championships in men's hockey.
