Re-live the four most glorious Octobers in Oakland Athletics history! From Charlie Finley's bright-yellow-and-green counterculture dynasty of the early 1970s, to the swaggering Bashers of Tony LaRussa's late-1980s squad, this DVD brings four great World Series of the past back to life.
Featuring Major League Baseball's official World Series films for each of the four championship seasons, this DVD gives you over two-and-a-half hours of classic post-season action. First, it's the 1972 series, narrated by the legendary Curt Gowdy. It starts with the moment that made the A's a distinct underdog against the powerhouse Cincinnati Reds: Reggie Jackson's hamstring-yanking slide at home that gave his squad victory over the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS and put him on crutches for the rest of the year (and Bert Campaneris' bat-throwing incident that cost him a one-game suspension). All the great moments of the miraculous 7-game series win are here, including: Gene Tenace's MVP slugging; Jackie Robinson's farewell speech before Game 2 (his final appearance at a Major League stadium); Joe Rudi's game-saving catch; great pitching performances from Blue Moon Odom, Vida Blue, Ken Holtzman, and Rollie Fingers; Pete Rose's first-pitch home run in Game 5; and Bobby Tolan's outfield blunders that helped lead to Oakland's Game 7 celebrations in front of the disappointed crowd at Riverfront Stadium.
Next, it's the 1973 film, also narrated by Gowdy, featuring the favored A's beating Yogi Berra's miracle New York Mets in seven. After Hank Aaron, standing just one Home Run shy of Babe Ruth's record, throws out the first pitch, and the Bay Area fans give Willie Mays a standing ovation in his return to the Fall Classic, it's time for the action: the wacky 12-inning Game 2 marathon, after which Finley tried to fire Mike Andrews; those cold weeknights at Shea that finished with Rusty Staub's slugging and a Mets 3-2 series lead; and Reggie earning MVP honors with his heroic Game 6 and 7 performances back at the Coliseum.
The 1974 film begins with a Vin Scully introduction to the "Freeway Series", the first-ever all-California series. Narrated by Gowdy, it features all the great moments of the Athletics-Dodgers matchup: Joe Ferguson's amazing throw from right field to nail Sal Bando at the plate; "Designated Runner" Herb Washington getting picked off to spoil Oakland's 9th-inning rally in Game 2; Dick Green's slick fielding at second base; and Rudi's tie-breaking homer in the A's Game 5 clincher.
Moving ahead to the final World Series film on this DVD, we have the 1989 "Battle of the Bay", also known as the Earthquake Series. In addition to all the baseball action in Oakland's four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants, it gives a great documentary account of the massive quake that rocked Northern California, delayed Game 3 for 10 days, and put the Fall Classic into true perspective. It also features a fine tribute to former commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti, who passed away suddenly during the tumultuous 1989 season. Narrated by Al Michaels, who called the series for ABC sports, it features some great baseball moments by the dominating Bash 'n Dashers: Rickey Henderson's terror on the basepaths, and Jose Canseco's 5th-deck homer at Skydome, during the A's defeat of the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS; Dave Parker's Game 1 bomb, and hot-dog trot around the bases; Terry Steinbach's three-run blast in Game 2; Oakland's 5-HR power display in Game 3; and the cruise-control blowout in Game 4.
With rare, historic coverage that also features memorable stars like Johnny Bench, Dave Concepcion, Cesar Geronimo, Denis Menke, Hal McRae, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Jerry Grote, Bud Harrelson, Cleon Jones, Tom Seaver, Tug McGraw, Jerry Koosman, Bill Buckner, Ron Cey, Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, Jimmy Wynn, Steve Yeager, Don Sutton, Mike Marshall, Andy Messersmith, Will Clark, Brett Butler, Kevin Mitchell, Matt Williams, Ray Fosse, Darold Knowles, Carney Lansford, Walt Weiss, Dave Henderson, Mark McGwire, Tony Phillips, Dave Stewart, Dennis Eckersley and more, this is an amazing find for any baseball lover.
