Previous championships include the 1995 Senior Open, the 1964 Open, the 1959 Women's Amateur and the 1949 U.S. Junior Amateur. First place money for the 1997 Open is $465,000. The 1964 winner, Ken Venturi, received $17,500. 1997 is the 97th U.S. Open Championship which was first played in 1895.
